The Greater Noida West underpass at Kisan Chowk, also known as Gaur Chowk or Char Murti Chowk, is expected to open to traffic before Diwali after around 95% of construction work was completed, according to the Greater Noida Authority. The six-lane facility is intended to reduce congestion at one of the area’s busiest junctions and improve connections towards Gaur City, the Delhi–Meerut Expressway and surrounding residential areas.
The 700-metre underpass, being built at an estimated cost of Rs 92 crore, began construction in July 2024. The project was initially targeted for completion within 18 months, but the deadline of August 15 was missed after construction activity was affected by restrictions imposed under the Graded Response Action Plan and by stoppages during peak traffic hours.
Vijay Rawal, deputy general manager (civil) of the Greater Noida Authority, said the remaining work would be completed within a few days and that the inauguration date would be announced soon. The authority has not yet specified the exact date on which the underpass will be opened for general traffic.
The structure includes roughly 350 metres of underpass works on either side of the junction. Civil construction is largely complete, while road marking, lighting, painting of the walls and installation of sheds on the ramps are still under way. Paintings depicting Buddha and nature-themed scenes are also being added to the interior walls.
The authority has constructed two U-turns near the junction and resurfaced the parallel road. These changes are intended to support traffic movement around the underpass and manage vehicles that continue to use the surface road. A trial run will be conducted before the facility is opened to the public, officials said.
Kisan Chowk currently handles traffic from Noida, Surajpur, Crossings Republik and the Delhi–Meerut Expressway. The congestion is also linked to the rapid residential expansion of Greater Noida West, where the project is expected to serve more than five lakh residents. Once operational, vehicles travelling towards Gaur City and the Delhi–Meerut Expressway will be able to pass beneath the junction, potentially reducing the volume of through traffic at the intersection.
The underpass is also expected to improve movement towards the Vijay Nagar area of Ghaziabad. In September, traffic was diverted for two weeks to allow construction of the pavement-quality concrete road above the underpass. The authority’s next steps are to complete the remaining finishing works, conduct the trial run and announce the opening date.
