The Yogi Adityanath government has partnered with ETH Zurich and RTDT Laboratories AG in Switzerland to deploy advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and sensor-based technology on the Ganga Expressway.
This cutting-edge system enables real-time monitoring of construction quality and riding comfort, marking a major leap in India’s highway engineering standards. The 594-km Ganga Expressway, spanning 12 districts from Meerut to Prayagraj, is set to become India’s longest expressway. To enhance both safety and passenger experience, the expressway is now being tested using Swiss innovation. A specially designed Innova vehicle, outfitted with vibration detection and seven accelerometer sensors, is monitoring all six lanes for surface uniformity, comfort level, and elevation variations. Unlike traditional post-construction inspections, this AI-powered method allows for early detection and rectification of defects, significantly lowering future maintenance costs. “The real-time graphs generated by the vehicle’s sensors make it easier to identify uneven sections during construction itself,” said Shrihari Pratap Shahi, Additional CEO of UPEIDA.
The collaboration with ETH Zurich and RTDT Laboratories AG reflects Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to modernising its infrastructure using global standards. The technology measures road elevation and ride quality with precision, allowing engineers to take immediate corrective steps. Previously, such evaluations were only done after project completion, limiting the scope for intervention. After its successful rollout on the Ganga Expressway, the same technology is set to be introduced on the 91.35-km Gorakhpur Link Expressway, which connects to the Purvanchal Expressway. This move supports the Yogi government’s broader vision of making Uttar Pradesh an “Expressway State” through high-quality infrastructure.
By incorporating Swiss engineering into India’s transport development, the state is not only building roads but setting new benchmarks for highway comfort and longevity.
