Mumbai motorists may soon see relief from chronic traffic congestion, as a new 550-metre-long tunnel connecting Dadar and Prabhadevi with the Mumbai Coastal Road is expected to be operational by May 2025.
Designed to streamline east-west connectivity, the tunnel will run beneath Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan Road and directly link J K Kapur Chowk with Bindoo Madhav Thackeray Chowk near Worli Sea Face. Currently, last-mile work such as painting lane markings, installing lighting, and finishing sidewall surfaces is underway. Once operational, the 11-metre-wide tunnel will be reserved for vehicles coming from Dadar and Prabhadevi. These commuters will gain swift access to both the western suburbs and southern Mumbai via the Sewri-Worli elevated corridor and the Coastal Road.
Traffic planners believe the underpass will significantly decongest key stretches of Worli, reducing bottlenecks and travel delays during peak hours. The underpass will offer two onward options—towards Bandra or southbound to Marine Drive and Nariman Point—creating a seamless link across the city’s major arterial routes. The tunnel is part of Mumbai’s broader efforts to improve urban mobility and is being closely integrated with the ongoing Coastal Road project. According to civic authorities, this connection will optimise vehicle flow and complement existing elevated and coastal infrastructure.
The new link also reflects a strategic shift towards underground urban solutions in a densely built-up city like Mumbai, where land availability for road expansion is limited. Commuters and urban planners alike see this as a step forward in tackling one of the city’s most persistent civic challenges.
