Northeast Corridor to Boost Connectivity and Economy

The Centre has sanctioned a ₹22,864 crore Greenfield High-Speed Corridor project connecting Mawlyngkhung in Meghalaya to Panchgram in Assam.

Spanning 166.80 km, with 144.80 km in Meghalaya and 22 km in Assam, this project is poised to enhance inter-city connectivity, bolster economic growth, and promote tourism in Northeast India. The proposed four-lane, access-controlled highway aims to alleviate congestion on the existing NH-06, facilitating smoother travel between Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar. This initiative aligns with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, emphasizing integrated infrastructure development to spur economic activity. The corridor will integrate with major highways such as NH-27, NH-106, NH-206, and NH-37, providing seamless connectivity to key locations including Diengpasoh, Ummulong, Phramer, Khlieriat, Ratachera, Umkiang, and Kalain.

Upon completion, the corridor is expected to handle daily traffic of 19,000–20,000 Passenger Car Units (PCU) by FY25, significantly improving logistics efficiency and reducing travel time. The project is anticipated to generate approximately 137 lakh man-days of direct and indirect employment, contributing to the socio-economic upliftment of the region. The corridor’s development is also expected to stimulate tourism by improving access to scenic destinations and regional airports, including those in Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar. Enhanced connectivity will facilitate easier movement for tourists, thereby boosting local economies and promoting cultural exchange.

The project is being implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways overseeing its execution. This model ensures a balanced risk-sharing between the public and private sectors, aiming for timely completion and quality maintenance of the infrastructure. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to fostering regional development through strategic infrastructure investments, aligning with the broader vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat. By enhancing connectivity, the project is set to play a pivotal role in the economic integration of Northeast India with the rest of the country.
