A major construction milestone has been reached on the Gaimukh-Payegaon Creek Bridge project in Thane, with piling work along the creek section crossing 95 per cent and overall work reported at around 25 per cent, according to an official update issued on Sunday. The project is being developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
The bridge will connect Gaimukh on Ghodbunder Road with Chinchoti and Paye-Payegaon, creating a new road link towards Bhiwandi, Vasai and other northern parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The latest update said pier erection and pier-cap construction were also progressing, while work was continuing at both the Gaimukh and Paye-Payegaon ends.
The project is intended to provide a more direct route for commuters and freight traffic travelling between Thane, Bhiwandi, Vasai and adjoining areas. At present, vehicles travelling from Thane towards Chinchoti, Payegaon and Vasai use the route near Ghodbunder, including a ghat section where traffic movement is affected by heavy vehicles and congestion along the broader corridor.
Ghodbunder Road carries traffic between Thane, Mumbai’s western suburbs, Mira-Bhayandar and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway. The new creek crossing is expected to bypass the existing section for traffic heading towards Chinchoti, Payegaon and Vasai once it is completed. The latest update did not announce an opening date or provide a revised completion schedule.
MMRDA said the piling and pier construction work for the creek portion was nearing completion. The authority has described the bridge as part of a broader effort to strengthen Thane’s road, metro and tunnel connectivity and support the city’s development as a mobility-linked economic centre.
The bridge is also planned to connect with a wider network of transport projects in the region, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor, the Thane Coastal Road, the Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor, the Diva-Vasai railway line, National Highway 48 and the Anjur-Chinchoti Road.
According to the project update, the Gaimukh-Payegaon Creek Bridge is expected to strengthen links between key economic centres, improve regional mobility and support freight movement across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Construction activity is continuing at the bridge approaches and creek section as the project advances.
