A women’s safety march from Miranda House brought students and representatives from several Delhi University colleges together on Monday to demand a safer and more respectful campus environment, stronger security arrangements and faster resolution of complaints.
The march was organised amid renewed concern over the safety of female students at Delhi University. Participants called for an environment in which students could study, travel within the university and raise concerns without fear. They also said security systems should function regularly rather than become active only after an incident.
The demonstration included Delhi University Students’ Union secretary Riya Chhabri and student representatives from different colleges. Students participating in the march, including members associated with ABVP, said women should be able to attend classes and move through the university campus without intimidation or apprehension.
A central demand was the creation of a more accountable and time-bound complaints mechanism. Student representatives said complaints related to safety and dignity should be addressed promptly, with responsibility clearly assigned for follow-up and resolution. The demands place the university’s internal response systems alongside physical security as part of campus safety.
DUSU president Yash Dabas said women’s safety should not be treated as an issue limited to a single incident. He said concerns relating to students’ safety and dignity would continue to be raised before the university administration and called for concrete steps towards a secure campus, faster complaint resolution and improved security arrangements.
Riya Chhabri said students had the right to study, travel and express themselves at the university without fear. She also called for all cases concerning women’s safety to be addressed with equal sensitivity.
During the march, student leaders referred to various safety-related cases involving female students that had emerged in the past. Student representatives demanded regular reviews of campus security arrangements and measures to ensure a safe and respectful environment for women.
