Munak Canal Chhath Ghats Face Deadline Push Before Festival

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed officials to complete construction and civic works at the Chhath ghats along the Munak Canal near Prem Bari Bridge in Singalpur before the four-day festival begins on November 13, after inspecting the site on Saturday.

The instructions cover ghat walls, roads, pathways, drainage, lighting, sanitation, debris removal and wall painting. The site is among the important locations for Chhath celebrations in northwest Delhi and is expected to draw devotees from surrounding residential colonies during the festival.

Gupta asked officials to complete the ghat walls, access roads and pathways within the deadline, while also ordering inspections of drainage systems and approach routes. She said construction quality should not be compromised in the effort to finish the work before the festival.

The chief minister also reviewed landscaping along the canal and criticised what she described as unplanned plantation. Officials were asked to prepare a comprehensive design for systematic green belts along the area. The direction places the canal-side works within a broader plan involving the bridge, roads, green spaces and ghats rather than treating each element as a separate construction activity.

“Unnecessary construction should be avoided and it should be ensured that development works do not obstruct traffic or pedestrian movement. Roads, green spaces, the bridge and ghats should be developed under an integrated plan,” Gupta said, according to the report.

Access and movement will be significant operational concerns at the venue, where large numbers of devotees are expected to arrive during the festival. The chief minister directed officials to ensure that construction activity does not block roads or pedestrian routes and that drainage arrangements are checked before the celebrations begin.

Sanitation was another focus of the inspection. Gupta instructed officials to prevent garbage accumulation on roads and establish a proper collection and disposal system. She also directed that sanitation be maintained continuously after the construction work is completed, extending the civic responsibility beyond the festival preparations themselves.

The festival will be observed from November 13 to 16. Before then, officials are expected to finish the pending civil works, inspect access and drainage routes, complete lighting and landscaping arrangements, and put in place systems for waste collection and disposal at the Munak Canal site.
