The Kalyan District and Sessions Court has rejected the bail application of Sadhna Sanjay Karande, an accused in the assault case involving doctors at Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli. The order was passed on Tuesday by Sessions Judge N. P. Vasade after the prosecution opposed her release.
Karande was present at the hospital when corporator Ramesh Sukarya Mhatre allegedly assaulted doctors, according to the report. Police have accused her of being involved in the case after CCTV footage showed her arguing intensely with medical officer Dr Srushti Baviskar while the assault was taking place.
Vishnunagar police have named Karande as an accused along with Ramesh Mhatre, Ramesh Pawar and Pramod Nikam. The case concerns the alleged assault of doctors at Shastrinagar Hospital. The specific role attributed to each accused will be determined through the judicial process.
Karande has been in Aadharwadi jail in Kalyan for the past two months after the completion of her police custody. She had been seeking bail through her lawyer since last month. Her bail application was heard before Judge Vasade’s court on Tuesday.
Special Public Prosecutor Prakash Salshingekar represented the prosecution during the hearing. The prosecution highlighted the seriousness of the alleged assault and the broader concern over increasing attacks on doctors. The report also stated that the seriousness of such incidents has been noted by the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court.
The case has also involved an extensive police investigation. Kalyan Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Zende supervised the investigation, which was conducted over approximately one-and-a-half months. Police have submitted an 1,836-page chargesheet to the Kalyan court, according to the report.
The bail rejection means Karande will remain in custody at this stage of the proceedings. The court’s order does not determine the final guilt or innocence of any accused. Further proceedings in the assault case will continue before the Kalyan court.
