Delhi Water Connections Face Six-Month DJB e-KYC Drive

The Delhi Jal Board has begun a six-month citywide electronic Know Your Customer drive to verify water connections, update consumer records and improve billing accuracy across the capital. The exercise will involve door-to-door checks of registered water consumers, with authorised field personnel using GPS tagging and live photographs of water meters.

During the verification, survey teams will check water connection details, property addresses, mobile numbers and meter status. Properties will be geo-tagged, while meter photographs and related information will be digitally recorded. The Delhi Jal Board said the exercise is intended to strengthen its consumer database and identify duplicate, outdated or incomplete records.

The updated records are also expected to help the utility address complaints involving incorrect, delayed or undelivered water bills. More accurate consumer information could support more efficient bill distribution and allow digital delivery of bills and related communication through email and WhatsApp, wherever applicable.

For residents, the process will require careful verification of the personnel visiting their properties. The DJB has advised consumers to check an official identity card and authorisation before sharing personal or property-related information. Residents may keep their water bills, identity proof and ownership or occupancy documents ready for the verification process.

The water utility has warned consumers not to hand over original documents or share sensitive information, including one-time passwords, Aadhaar-linked details and financial information, with unauthorised persons. The warning is significant because the exercise involves collecting information linked to household identities, properties and water-service accounts.

The e-KYC exercise is free of cost, and consumers are not required to pay surveyors or provide gifts. The DJB has asked residents to report any demand for money or other improper requests through its official complaint channels. It has also appealed to consumers to provide accurate and updated information so that the verification can be completed within the stipulated six-month period.

The initiative places digital record correction at the centre of water-service administration in Delhi. Its immediate stated objectives are to improve transparency in billing, reduce discrepancies in consumer records and make service communication more efficient. The next operational milestone is the completion of the citywide verification drive within six months.
