A shortage of night bus services from Paravur to Ernakulam through Vypeen is causing hardship for passengers, with commuters reporting that private buses largely stop operating on the route after 8.30 pm.
According to a report by Mathrubhumi – Kochi, only four buses leave Paravur for Ernakulam after 7.15 pm. These services begin their trips at 7.23 pm, 7.37 pm, 7.41 pm and 8.17 pm. Four or five other buses also operate partially during this period, but passengers say the available services do not meet the demand for late-evening travel.
The gap is particularly difficult for students returning after tuition classes, people travelling after work and residents making journeys for other essential purposes. Passengers who take a full ticket for their journey are among those facing difficulties when regular services are no longer available later in the evening.
The imbalance is more visible when services in the opposite direction are considered. Around 10 buses operate from Ernakulam through Vypeen between 8.28 pm and 9.40 pm, according to the report. Passengers say the limited availability from Paravur towards Ernakulam leaves them with fewer options during the same period.
The route connects Paravur and Ernakulam through Vypeen, making its evening availability important for residents who depend on public transport for access to work, education and essential services. The shortage also places greater pressure on passengers to arrange alternative transport after the last convenient services have departed.
Passengers have suggested that long-distance buses already operating in the area should be permitted to travel through this route, which they say could provide an immediate improvement to night connectivity. They have also demanded Kerala State Road Transport Corporation services through Vypeen at 30-minute intervals between 8 pm and 10 pm.
The report does not include a response from private bus operators, the transport authorities or the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation on the demands. The requested measures and any decision on additional or rerouted services therefore remain pending.
