Delhi’s Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), conceived as the capital’s third ring road, is changing how traffic can move between the city and neighbouring Haryana. The 76-km corridor, along with its Sonipat and Bahadurgarh spurs, creates alternative routes around congested parts of Delhi and strengthens links to industrial areas, major highways and airport-bound traffic.
The six-lane UER-II runs from Alipur on NH-44 through western Delhi towards Dichaon Kalan and the Dwarka side of the capital. Its wider network includes a 29.6-km Sonipat spur from Bawana Industrial Area and a 7.3-km Bahadurgarh spur. The latter provides a direct connection towards NH-09 and the KMP Expressway, while the Sonipat route offers an alternative to NH-44. For commuters and freight operators, the significance lies less in another road and more in route choice. Vehicles travelling between northern Delhi, Sonipat, Bahadurgarh, western Delhi and the airport can increasingly avoid entering central traffic corridors. Government project documents estimate that UER-II can improve average travel speeds and reduce journey times, while its links are intended to support industrial and logistics movement across the NCR.
The network is also becoming part of a larger regional highway system. UER-II connects with the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway, creating a route towards the IGI Airport area and Gurugram. A separate 8.1-km six-lane tunnel project approved in July 2026 will connect the Dwarka Expressway at Shiv Murti with Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant Kunj. Its planned alignment includes a 3.14-km twin-tube tunnel, including a section beneath the Southern Ridge, making environmental safeguards an important part of implementation. At the northern end, the corridor’s wider planning framework is also being extended towards other NCR connections. Government plans include strengthening links with the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway and extending UER-II towards the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway and Uttar Pradesh. These links could redistribute long-distance traffic that currently depends heavily on Delhi’s existing ring roads and NH-44.
The economic impact could be significant for areas around Bawana, Sonipat and Bahadurgarh, where better road access can support industrial activity, warehousing and employment. But faster connectivity can also accelerate land conversion and development pressure. Without coordinated public transport, drainage, water systems, green buffers and pedestrian access, road-led growth could shift congestion rather than eliminate it. For citizens, the real measure of UER-II will therefore be how well the new network reduces everyday delays while supporting safer, cleaner and more balanced urban growth. The next phase of NCR connectivity will need to ensure that highway expansion is matched by resilient local infrastructure and accessible mobility.
