Delhi Traffic Advisory Signals Red Fort Disruptions
Delhi is set for significant traffic restrictions on August 13 as the Independence Day full-dress rehearsal takes place at the Red Fort. The Delhi Traffic Police advisory places temporary controls on key roads from 4am to 10am, while restrictions on goods vehicles and interstate buses will begin earlier. The measures are expected to affect cross-city movement, public transport and access to central and northern Delhi.
The main closures will cover several roads around the Red Fort, including Netaji Subhash Marg, Lothian Road, SP Mukherjee Marg, Chandni Chowk Road, Nishad Raj Marg and sections of the Ring Road. Only vehicles carrying the required rehearsal parking labels will be permitted on the restricted stretches during the morning window. For daily commuters, the disruption is likely to extend beyond the immediate Red Fort area. Traffic police have advised motorists without rehearsal parking labels to avoid corridors around India Gate, C-Hexagon, Mandi House, Tilak Marg, Mathura Road, Jawaharlal Nehru Marg and the Ring Road between Nizamuddin Khatta and ISBT Kashmere Gate. Alternative north-south routes have been identified through corridors such as Aurobindo Marg, Safdarjung Road, Kamal Ataturk Marg, Panchkuian Road and Rani Jhansi Road. Commuters travelling across the Yamuna can also use routes through Nizamuddin Bridge, Pushta Road, GT Road and Yudhishthir Setu.
East-west movement will also require advance planning. Routes through NH-24, NH-9, Barapula Road, DND and parts of the Ring Road are among the options available to traffic. The advisory also identifies several bridge and arterial connections that will remain operational, providing alternatives around the restricted zone. The wider impact is particularly relevant for public transport and commercial movement. Goods vehicles will face restrictions between Nizamuddin Khatta and Wazirabad Bridge from midnight on August 12 until 11am on August 13. Interstate bus movement between Maharana Pratap ISBT and Sarai Kale Khan ISBT will also be restricted during this period. Local city buses, including DTC services, will be diverted away from specified sections of the Ring Road. For a city already managing high traffic volumes, temporary event-related closures can increase travel times and fuel use when diversions are not planned efficiently.
A coordinated approach that prioritises public transport, emergency access and clear route information can help reduce the disruption and its environmental cost. The restrictions also form part of wider security arrangements around Independence Day. Delhi has separately imposed restrictions on several unconventional aerial platforms, including drones and hot-air balloons, until August 16. Commuters are therefore likely to benefit from leaving earlier, checking routes before departure and avoiding the Red Fort area during the peak restriction period. The immediate priority will be keeping essential movement functioning while limiting avoidable congestion across adjoining neighbourhoods.
