Delhi: A major underground infrastructure renewal programme is set to reshape wastewater management across Rohini’s western sectors, with authorities preparing a ₹59 crore sewer rehabilitation project covering nearly 12.5 kilometres of ageing pipelines. Designed to serve more than 120,000 residents, the intervention aims to restore network reliability while reducing repeated maintenance disruptions in one of northwest Delhi’s established residential districts.
The project focuses on sewer corridors spanning Sectors 20 to 25, where underground pipelines installed several decades ago have progressively deteriorated. Structural wear, recurring blockages and reduced carrying capacity have increasingly affected wastewater movement, resulting in frequent repairs and rising operational costs for civic agencies. Instead of replacing the entire network through large-scale excavation, officials have opted for a rehabilitation strategy that reinforces existing pipelines using specialised trenchless engineering methods. Urban infrastructure specialists note that such techniques minimise disruption to neighbourhoods, shorten construction timelines and reduce waste generated through conventional replacement, making them increasingly relevant for dense urban environments. The proposed work also includes restoration of 419 manholes, a critical component often overlooked in underground utility upgrades. Officials familiar with the project indicate that the contract award process is expected shortly, with physical construction likely to begin within the coming months once procedural formalities conclude. The complete sewer rehabilitation programme has been planned over an estimated 18-month execution period, allowing phased work across different sections of the network without widespread interruption to residents. Urban planners say the investment reflects a broader shift towards extending the lifespan of existing civic assets rather than relying solely on costly reconstruction. As mature neighbourhoods across Delhi face ageing underground infrastructure, rehabilitation-based approaches are increasingly viewed as financially prudent while also limiting environmental impacts associated with extensive excavation and material replacement.
