BMC Modak Mahotsav 2026 Opens Festive Orders Across Mumbai

BMC Modak Mahotsav 2026 will allow Mumbai residents to order steamed and fried modaks made by women’s self-help groups supported by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation during the Ganeshotsav period.

The initiative has been organised by the BMC to give these groups access to customers across the city during one of Mumbai’s strongest seasonal demand periods. Online orders can be placed through shgeshop.com, with home delivery scheduled to begin from Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14.

The delivery service will be limited to addresses within Mumbai. Customers must register at least one day before placing an order, according to information from the BMC Planning Department. The ordering facility is expected to remain available throughout Ganeshotsav 2026.

Customers will be able to choose between ukadiche modaks, which are steamed, and fried modaks prepared by the participating self-help groups. Modaks are traditionally offered during Ganeshotsav, creating a predictable but concentrated market for the product during the festival.

The BMC-backed groups participating in the initiative receive financial assistance from the civic body. Through Modak Mahotsav 2026, the corporation is positioning that support as a route to market access rather than limiting it to financial assistance or group formation.

The initiative is being conducted under the guidance of Meenal Turde, chairperson of the BMC Women and Child Welfare Committee. The civic body said its broader objective is to promote products made by women’s self-help groups and create additional business opportunities during the festive season.

The programme also reflects the administrative role local governments can play in connecting small producers with urban consumers. In this case, the BMC is facilitating the participation of groups it supports, while an online ordering system and citywide delivery mechanism are being used to make their products available beyond their immediate neighbourhoods.

Dr Prachi Jambhekar, director of the BMC Planning Department, said the initiative would allow Mumbaikars to purchase modaks prepared by the groups while supporting women entrepreneurs. The BMC said the programme is intended to encourage financial independence and self-reliance among women involved in the self-help groups.

Orders will be accepted during the festival through shgeshop.com, subject to the registration requirement and Mumbai-only delivery area. Home deliveries are scheduled to start on September 14, the day of Ganesh Chaturthi.
