A deteriorating stretch of Wazirabad Road between Yamuna Vihar and Bhajanpura in east Delhi is slowing traffic and affecting access to nearby markets, with damaged surfaces and unfinished sections following utility-related excavation. The disruption is becoming a wider urban concern as potholes, uneven carriageways and peak-hour congestion increase travel delays and raise safety risks for pedestrians and motorists.
The road’s problems are visible on both the main carriageway and service roads. Several sections have damaged surfaces, while parts excavated for sewer and other infrastructure work have not been fully restored. Uneven patches force vehicles to reduce speed or change lanes abruptly, creating additional conflict on an already busy corridor. For commuters, the impact goes beyond longer travel times. Two-wheelers, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users face greater exposure when vehicles manoeuvre around potholes or unfinished road sections. During rainfall, poor drainage and water accumulation can make damaged areas harder to identify and further reduce road capacity. The condition is also affecting the commercial activity that depends on reliable access. Traders operating around the corridor say congestion and difficult road access can discourage customers from visiting local markets. For small businesses, even a sustained decline in footfall can affect daily turnover, particularly where customers have alternative shopping areas within a short distance.
The situation highlights a recurring challenge in Delhi’s infrastructure network: roads are frequently opened for underground utilities, but the quality and timing of subsequent restoration can determine how long disruption continues. Urban planners say coordination between utility agencies and road authorities is critical. A road restored without adequate compaction or surface finishing can deteriorate quickly, creating repeated maintenance costs and extending inconvenience for residents. The issue also has an environmental dimension. Stop-start traffic caused by bottlenecks increases fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Poor road surfaces can also encourage traffic to divert through residential streets, shifting congestion and safety risks to neighbourhoods that were not designed to handle additional traffic.
A district-level official has indicated that repair work on the corridor is already under way, with one phase completed and another expected to begin soon. The immediate priority will be to restore a continuous, safe surface while limiting further disruption to traffic and local businesses. For the Wazirabad Road, the longer-term test will be whether repairs address the underlying causes rather than simply filling visible potholes. Better utility coordination, durable road restoration and effective drainage can reduce repeat damage and help make this important east Delhi corridor safer, more reliable and more resilient.
