Delhi Mundka Najafgarh Drain Targets Monsoon Flooding

A 4.5-km drainage corridor planned between Mundka and Najafgarh is moving through the tender and approval process as Delhi seeks to address chronic monsoon waterlogging in its western districts. The project is significant not only for flood relief but also for the city’s ability to upgrade drainage networks as rainfall becomes more intense and urban development continues to add pressure on existing infrastructure.

The proposed Mundka Najafgarh drain will run alongside the Delhi-Bhatinda railway corridor, beginning near Mundka Halt and connecting towards Najafgarh. A supplementary drain is also part of the scheme. Government planning documents put the project’s earlier estimated cost at ₹220.93 crore and identify low-lying areas around Kirari as particularly vulnerable to waterlogging. The project is designed to serve a catchment of roughly 1,520 acres, with a planned discharge capacity of about 760 cusecs. That capacity matters because the problem is not limited to individual blocked drains. In several western Delhi neighbourhoods, inadequate trunk drainage can leave local roads and smaller channels unable to move stormwater quickly during heavy rainfall.

Public tender records show that the Irrigation and Flood Control Department issued the construction tender in March 2026. The tender value was listed at about ₹200.48 crore, with a one-year construction period and 10 years of operation and maintenance. The tender covers construction, commissioning and long-term upkeep of the drainage system. The cost picture, however, requires careful scrutiny. Secondary tender reporting has placed the lowest bid at ₹225.02 crore, above the tender’s stated value. An accessible official award record confirming that figure was not available at the time of reporting. Any increase in public expenditure should therefore be assessed alongside the final contract terms, scope and long-term maintenance obligations.

For residents, the test will be whether the Mundka Najafgarh drain actually reduces the duration and spread of waterlogging during peak rainfall. Urban planners note that a trunk drain alone cannot solve flooding if feeder drains remain blocked, construction alters natural drainage paths or new development continues without adequate stormwater capacity. The project also highlights a wider planning challenge for Delhi. Climate resilience increasingly depends on combining large drainage infrastructure with local water retention, permeable surfaces, regular desilting and protection of natural drainage channels. For the western suburbs, effective delivery and maintenance will ultimately determine whether this investment becomes durable flood protection or another capacity upgrade that falls short as the city expands.
