Railway authorities are preparing to strengthen video surveillance across 20 stations in and around Delhi NCR, with electrical infrastructure forming a key part of the planned upgrade. The project covers stations in Delhi as well as Meerut Cantonment, Bahadurgarh and Gurugram. The move could improve passenger safety while giving stations stronger monitoring capacity as urban mobility networks expand.
The proposed railway station surveillance system will require supporting electrical works before the equipment can operate reliably. According to the tender details, the work includes PVC conduit pipes, electrical cables, RCBOs, low-tension distribution boards and other related materials. Around 980 metres of PVC conduit piping is expected to be used as part of the electrical installation. RCBOs, which combine circuit protection and residual-current protection, are intended to reduce electrical risks. Low-tension distribution boards will also help manage power supply for the surveillance infrastructure. The project has been assigned a six-month completion period. While the technology itself is important, the supporting electrical network will determine how consistently the railway station surveillance system can function across busy public spaces. For passengers, better surveillance can have a direct civic value. Railway stations bring together commuters, long-distance travellers, workers, vendors and visitors, often within crowded and highly time-sensitive environments.
Wider camera coverage can help security teams monitor movement, identify incidents and respond more quickly when problems arise. Urban planners note that such systems are becoming increasingly relevant as metropolitan regions rely more heavily on public transport. Delhi NCR’s railway network connects major employment centres and residential areas, making station security part of the wider urban infrastructure equation rather than a standalone railway concern. There is also an operational dimension. Surveillance systems require dependable power, suitable cable routing and maintainable equipment. Poorly planned electrical installations can create maintenance challenges, particularly at stations exposed to heavy footfall, weather and continuous operations.
The expansion therefore highlights a broader requirement for public infrastructure: digital systems need to be supported by resilient physical assets. For cities seeking safer and more efficient transport networks, investment in monitoring technology will have greater value when paired with reliable electricity, accessible station design, drainage and other basic services. The next test will be implementation. Once the electrical works and surveillance systems are installed, their effectiveness will depend on coverage, maintenance and how quickly security personnel can act on the information generated.
