The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is set for expanded technology-led traffic monitoring in Faridabad, where around 450 Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are being planned across the district. The proposed network will help record vehicle registration plates, identify traffic violations and support investigations after road accidents. The move comes as the expressway becomes increasingly important to regional mobility and economic connectivity.
Faridabad Police has approached the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to initiate the camera installation process. Officials expect the cameras to be installed within roughly a month after the required formalities are completed. ANPR technology uses cameras and optical recognition systems to automatically read vehicle registration numbers. This allows authorities to identify vehicles passing specific locations without depending entirely on manual traffic checks. For the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the proposed surveillance network could be particularly useful in monitoring speeding and other violations. High-speed corridors require consistent enforcement because the consequences of crashes can be more severe than on conventional urban roads. The system could also help investigators after accidents or other incidents. Recorded number plates may provide an additional source of evidence when authorities need to trace a vehicle that has left the scene. The planned expansion also points to a wider shift in how major transport corridors are being managed. As Faridabad’s links with Delhi, Gurugram, Noida and other NCR centres improve, traffic management increasingly depends on real-time information and automated enforcement.
However, cameras alone cannot solve road-safety problems. Urban planners and transport specialists generally emphasise that technology works best when combined with appropriate speed management, road design, lighting, emergency response and regular maintenance. Poorly maintained surveillance systems can quickly reduce the value of otherwise large technology investments. Alongside the proposed camera network, authorities are also looking to improve traffic movement at nine intersections on the expressway. A proposal has been sent to the Faridabad Metropolitan Development Authority for installing traffic signals at these locations. The combination of automated vehicle monitoring and improved junction management could become important as the corridor interacts more closely with local roads and built-up areas. Such interfaces often create conflicts between high-speed through traffic and everyday urban movement.
For residents and commuters, the key outcome will be whether these measures translate into safer journeys rather than simply greater surveillance. Effective enforcement, reliable equipment, responsible data handling and quick response to incidents will determine the practical value of the investment. As Faridabad’s transport network expands, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will increasingly function as part of a larger urban mobility system. Coordinating highway infrastructure with local traffic management will be essential to make that growth safer, more efficient and better suited to the city’s long-term development.
