Delhi Heat And Humidity Persist Before Weekend Shift
Delhi-NCR is set for another uncomfortable spell of heat and humidity on Saturday, with temperatures remaining high despite a generally cloudy sky. The weather pattern is exposing the region’s growing vulnerability to prolonged heat stress, particularly for outdoor workers, commuters and households without reliable cooling.
A gradual shift towards cooler conditions and rain is expected from Sunday and into the start of next week, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD’s latest city forecast indicates that temperatures across Delhi are likely to remain in the mid-to-high 30s on July 18 and 19. At New Delhi-Ridge, the forecast points to a maximum of around 36°C on Saturday, with thunderstorm activity and rain possible. Safdarjung and several other stations are also expected to record maximum temperatures near 36°C, before conditions begin to ease. The immediate concern is not only the daytime temperature. High humidity can make conditions feel considerably hotter by reducing the body’s ability to cool itself through sweating.
This increases the risk of heat stress, especially for people working outdoors, travelling through exposed public spaces or living in poorly ventilated homes. For a city-region with intense construction activity, extensive paved surfaces and uneven access to shade and cooling, such weather has a wider civic impact. Heat affects productivity, mobility and energy demand, while dense built-up areas can retain warmth well into the evening. The pressure is often greatest in neighbourhoods with limited tree cover and fewer climate-resilient public spaces. The forecast, however, suggests that relief may develop progressively rather than arrive through a single major weather event.
The IMD’s outlook shows lower minimum temperatures and continued chances of rain and thunderstorms from July 20, with further rainfall possibilities in the following days. The New Delhi-Ridge forecast, for example, projects a fall in the minimum temperature from around 27°C on July 18 to 24°C on July 20. This shift could temporarily reduce heat stress, but the episode also highlights a longer-term urban planning challenge. Delhi’s climate resilience will increasingly depend on how effectively streets, housing, transport networks and public spaces are designed to manage both extreme heat and sudden rainfall. For residents, the near-term outlook remains one of caution: another hot and humid day before conditions gradually improve. For city planners, the recurring pattern underlines the need to treat heat protection, shade, ventilation and rainfall management as essential urban infrastructure rather than seasonal concerns.
