Delhi Government Approves Rs 30000 Grant for Solar Households

The Delhi government has approved an additional subsidy of ₹30,000 for households installing rooftop solar panels.

This new incentive complements the central government’s flagship solar scheme, raising the total financial support to ₹1.08 lakh currently the highest combined subsidy for residential solar systems in the country. The decision was finalised at a recent Cabinet meeting held at the Delhi Secretariat. Under the initiative, city residents will receive ₹10,000 per kilowatt (kW) installed, on top of the central scheme that offers ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW and above. The programme targets the installation of rooftop solar systems at 2.3 lakh residential units over the next three years, with a projected cost of ₹50 crore.

The increased subsidy aims to make rooftop solar technology more accessible, reduce household electricity bills, and align the Capital’s climate goals with India’s broader energy transition. Households could save up to ₹4,200 monthly, depending on consumption and system capacity. To encourage wider adoption, the Delhi government will also partner with financial institutions to provide low-cost loans covering additional installation expenses, typically around ₹90,000. This makes it possible for homeowners to set up solar power systems with minimal upfront investment — a transformative step in democratising access to renewable energy. This initiative builds on the national Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana launched earlier in 2024, which promotes decentralised solar power and sustainable consumption across India. Delhi’s additional grant now positions it as a frontrunner in incentivising rooftop solar adoption.

Alongside this, the government has also approved a large-scale anti-pollution infrastructure plan to mitigate the Capital’s recurring air quality crisis. The plan includes procurement of 250 advanced water sprinklers integrated with anti-smog guns and 70 mechanical road sweepers to be deployed before winter, when pollution typically worsens. The budget for these air quality control measures will be routed through the Pollution Control and Emergency Measures scheme. This is part of a larger strategy to reduce dust pollution, improve sanitation, and prepare public infrastructure for climate resilience. In another move focused on social equity and education, the government has reinstated the earlier title of a scholarship scheme for high-performing students in government schools. The scheme will now once again operate under its original name while retaining its existing benefits — ₹2,500 annually for students from Class VII to XII securing 80% or above in the previous academic year.

Collectively, these decisions signal a decisive push towards an equitable, low-carbon urban future. With the solar subsidy and public environmental infrastructure upgrades working in tandem, Delhi is crafting a blueprint for sustainable, citizen-driven development. The success of these initiatives will hinge on effective implementation and public participation. However, with renewed financial and institutional backing, Delhi appears set to strengthen its leadership in India’s climate action narrative.
