Delhi Fire Services Gets 2,345 New Posts to Boost Rescue Capacity

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has approved 2,345 additional posts across the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), a move the Chief Minister’s Office said will strengthen firefighting and emergency rescue operations in the capital. The approval covers multiple ranks and categories, from senior officers to frontline personnel and support staff.

The CMO said the expansion is intended to increase personnel availability at different levels of the department and improve its organisational structure. The new posts include Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Divisional Officer, Assistant Divisional Officer, Station Officer, Sub-Officer, Leading Fireman and Fire Operator positions. The restructuring also includes posts such as Peon and Gardener.

According to the statement, the additional staffing will provide greater personnel availability in senior supervisory roles as well as among staff directly involved in firefighting and rescue operations. The CMO said the changes would help streamline responsibilities at different levels and improve the department’s efficiency during emergencies.

The decision comes against the backdrop of the urban pressures identified by the Delhi government, including a growing population, expanding built-up areas, densely populated settlements, high-rise buildings, industrial establishments and complex infrastructure. These conditions create varied operational demands for a fire service, requiring personnel to respond across residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructure settings.

The announcement places the fire service’s organisational capacity at the centre of Delhi’s emergency-response system. The approved posts span the chain of command, from senior supervisory positions to station-level and frontline roles. The CMO said this would strengthen leadership and improve the discharge of responsibilities within the department, although the statement did not provide a timeline for recruitment, deployment or the filling of individual posts.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said strengthening the service was essential to match Delhi’s growing needs and protect residents. “Every minute matters in the event of a fire or any other disaster. Adequately trained manpower, a strong leadership structure and the ability to respond quickly play a decisive role in protecting people and their property,” she said, according to the CMO statement.

The approval therefore represents an expansion of the sanctioned workforce of the Delhi Fire Services rather than a report of a specific fire or rescue incident. Details on recruitment procedures, training schedules, station-wise deployment and the operational timeline for the new posts were not included in the statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office.
