The Delhi Government has approved 2,345 additional posts across the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), a move aimed at expanding firefighting and emergency rescue capacity in the capital, the Chief Minister’s Office said on Saturday.
The new posts will be created across several ranks and categories, including Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Divisional Officer, Assistant Divisional Officer, Station Officer, Sub-Officer, Leading Fireman, Fire Operator, Peon and Gardener. The restructuring is intended to increase staffing at both supervisory and frontline levels.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the expansion was necessary to align the fire service with Delhi’s growing needs and improve the safety of residents. According to the CMO, the additional personnel will strengthen the department’s ability to respond to fires and other emergencies while helping protect lives and property.
“This will increase the availability of personnel at every level, from senior supervisory positions to frontline staff engaged in firefighting and rescue operations,” the CMO said in a statement. It added that the restructuring would streamline the department’s organisational structure, clarify responsibilities at different levels and improve its efficiency during emergencies.
The announcement comes as Delhi faces a more complex urban risk environment shaped by population growth, expanding built-up areas, densely populated settlements, high-rise buildings, industrial establishments and increasingly complex infrastructure. These conditions can make emergency access, evacuation and firefighting more demanding for response agencies.
The approved posts cover both operational and support functions. Frontline positions such as fire operators, leading firemen and sub-officers are expected to add personnel directly involved in firefighting and rescue operations, while senior and divisional positions are intended to strengthen command and supervision across the service. The list also includes support roles such as peons and gardeners.
The Chief Minister said that response time was critical during fires and other disasters. “Every minute matters in the event of a fire or any other disaster. Adequately trained manpower, a strong leadership structure and the ability to respond quickly play a decisive role in protecting people and their property,” she said.
The announcement does not specify in the supplied statement when recruitment will begin, how the posts will be distributed among Delhi’s fire stations, or the financial allocation associated with the restructuring. It also does not provide a revised total strength for the Delhi Fire Services or details of any accompanying changes to equipment, stations or fire-safety infrastructure.
The next stage will involve implementing the approved restructuring and filling the additional positions across the identified categories. The Chief Minister’s Office has not announced a recruitment timetable in the statement.
