Delhi DND Expressway Link Brings Faster NCR Access
A key missing link in Delhi’s southern road network is nearing operational readiness, with the 9-kilometre DND Maharani Bagh–Jaitpur Pushta section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway completed. The corridor could significantly improve access between southeast Delhi and the wider NCR, while also changing traffic patterns around Faridabad and the expressway network beyond.
The Delhi DND Expressway link is designed as a six-lane access-controlled corridor connecting the DND side of Maharani Bagh with Jaitpur Pushta Road. The project began in January 2022 and was originally scheduled for completion in 2025. Delays, including construction work around the Agra Canal crossing, pushed back the timeline. A formal opening date has not yet been confirmed. However, a launch around Independence Day is being considered, subject to the final decision and official scheduling. The project is listed by the National Highways Authority of India as a 9-kilometre access-controlled highway section under NH-148NA. The Delhi DND Expressway link is notable for its engineering profile. Around 7.5 kilometres of the stretch is elevated, including a large steel network arch bridge over the Agra Canal near Kalindi Kunj.
The structure uses about 2,396 metric tonnes of steel and is expected to remove a major physical barrier in the corridor’s alignment. Its wider importance lies in network connectivity rather than the length of the road itself. The completed section connects with the already operational route towards Faridabad, while further links extend towards the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway system and Sohna. This could offer commuters from parts of Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad a more direct route towards southern NCR destinations, although actual travel-time benefits will depend on access points, traffic management and integration with surrounding roads.
Urban planners say the corridor’s success should not be measured only by faster vehicle movement. New high-capacity roads can also increase traffic volumes, land pressure and development activity around their edges. Without coordinated public transport, pedestrian access and careful land-use planning, road expansion can shift congestion rather than eliminate it. For citizens, the immediate test will be whether the new link delivers reliable connectivity without creating fresh bottlenecks at its entry and exit points. As the Delhi DND Expressway link moves towards public use, its long-term value will depend on how effectively road capacity is integrated with cleaner mobility and broader NCR transport planning.
