Hyderabad: Telangana has completed administrative and civic preparations for the annual Ashada Bonalu celebrations, with authorities coordinating security, transport, sanitation and public services ahead of the month-long festival beginning on Thursday. The large-scale arrangements reflect the growing need for integrated urban management as Hyderabad accommodates major cultural events while maintaining mobility and public safety across the metropolitan region.
The festival will commence with the traditional offering at the historic Mahankali temple within Golconda Fort and continue until mid-August, concluding with ceremonial processions and rituals in the city’s old quarters. Officials have confirmed that celebrations will extend to more than 3,000 temples across Hyderabad, Rangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts, drawing large numbers of devotees over the coming weeks. With attendance expected to run into several lakhs, government departments have been directed to work through a coordinated operational framework covering crowd management, emergency response, traffic regulation, sanitation, drinking water supply and healthcare services. Civic administrators say such planning is increasingly essential for ensuring that large public gatherings are conducted safely without placing excessive strain on urban infrastructure. A significant component of this year’s operational plan involves Bonalu traffic diversions, particularly around Golconda Fort, where some of the largest gatherings are expected. Hyderabad Traffic Police have announced temporary route restrictions and diversions on key festival days between early morning and late evening. Roads connecting Ramdevguda, Langer Houz, Fathe Darwaza, Shaikpet, Seven Tombs and Banjara Darwaza are expected to experience congestion as pedestrian movement and ceremonial processions increase.
Alternative routes have been identified for commuters travelling between western Hyderabad neighbourhoods, including Narsingi, Sun City, Shaikpet, Film Nagar and Gachibowli. Traffic authorities have advised residents and commercial vehicle operators to plan journeys in advance and avoid festival corridors wherever possible during peak hours. Urban planners observe that managing religious festivals of this scale requires more than temporary policing measures. Efficient public transport integration, pedestrian-friendly access, real-time traffic monitoring and coordinated communication between departments are becoming critical elements of sustainable city management. Such approaches help minimise congestion, reduce emergency response times and improve the overall experience for both residents and visitors.
