Delhi’s Yamuna cruise service, initially planned to begin before Diwali, is now expected to start after the festival and before Chhath, according to a report by Jagran. The delay has been attributed to the government’s pre-Diwali engagements and the absence of time for a formal launch programme.
The proposed Yamuna cruise will operate between Sonia Vihar and the Shani Temple in Jagatpur. The planned journey is expected to take between 35 and 45 minutes, giving passengers a short river trip along this stretch of the Yamuna. The initial operation will use one cruise with seating for around 30 passengers.
The service was earlier expected to begin on November 4. However, the launch could not take place before Diwali because government officials were occupied with festival-related events and preparations, the report said. A date for the inauguration programme could therefore not be finalised.
According to the report, the cruise and related arrangements are largely ready. The vessel has also undergone testing for about a week before the proposed public launch. The testing phase is intended to prepare the service for passenger operations once the formal inauguration is scheduled.
The project is being presented as an effort to promote tourism on the Yamuna and create a new river-based activity in Delhi. The route linking Sonia Vihar with Jagatpur’s Shani Temple is expected to provide a defined tourism circuit rather than a general open-ended boat service.
The proposed operation also places attention on the limited ways in which the Yamuna is currently experienced as an urban space. While the river is a major geographical feature of Delhi, public-facing activities along its banks remain comparatively limited. A cruise service would add a managed recreational use to the river, but its operation will depend on the arrangements made for boarding, passenger movement and coordination around the route.
The report said the government expects greater tourism activity along the Yamuna to support local businesses and create employment opportunities. It did not provide details of the operating agency, passenger fares, daily departures, safety protocols, ticketing arrangements or the environmental conditions required for regular service.
The start of operations will therefore depend on the completion of the formal launch process and the final scheduling of the service. The current plan is to begin the Yamuna cruise after Diwali and before Chhath, with one 30-passenger vessel operating on the Sonia Vihar–Jagatpur route.
