The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has responded to a directive from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) by submitting a detailed report outlining the maintenance status and booking availability of parks under its jurisdiction.
In compliance with the NGT’s instructions, the report provides comprehensive information on the number of parks managed by the DDA, along with specific details regarding parks open for social gatherings and events. According to the report submitted to the NGT, the DDA is responsible for the maintenance of a total of 924 parks across Delhi. Additionally, the report identifies 18 parks that are available for booking for social gatherings and events, offering residents an opportunity to utilise these green spaces for various community activities. Interested individuals can access the booking process through the DDA’s official website, facilitating seamless coordination and management of park-related events.
The NGT’s directive, which prompted the submission of the report by the DDA, was issued following a plea filed in March 2023 concerning the alleged illegal use of Buddha Park near the Mayur Vihar Pocket-I Metro Station for social events, functions, and weddings. The petition highlighted concerns regarding noise pollution and other disturbances caused by such events, emphasising the need for stricter regulation and enforcement of park usage guidelines. In addition to disclosing park maintenance and booking information, the NGT’s directive also mandated the inclusion of details such as geo-coordinates and encroachments, if any, on the DDA’s official website. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance transparency and accountability in park management while addressing concerns related to unauthorised usage and environmental impact.
Furthermore, the NGT emphasised the importance of providing a platform for residents to lodge complaints regarding park maintenance issues. As part of the DDA’s response to this directive, the organisation is expected to establish a dedicated mechanism on its website for residents to report any maintenance-related grievances, ensuring timely resolution and effective management of park facilities. Overall, the collaborative efforts between the NGT and the DDA signify a commitment to promoting sustainable urban development and safeguarding green spaces for the benefit of Delhi’s residents. By prioritising transparency, accountability, and public participation, stakeholders can work together to preserve and enhance the city’s parks for present and future generations.
