Residents, non-governmental organisations and corporate companies can now register as volunteers through the upgraded Namma Chennai app to support the Greater Chennai Corporation during the northeast monsoon, emergencies and disaster-relief operations.
The facility allows applicants to sign up through the app’s “volunteer registration” option after logging in with a registered phone number. They can register as an individual, corporate entity or NGO/association, according to information released by the civic body and reported by the Times of India.
Applicants must provide details of any previous disaster-management experience and submit identity proof. The registration process also allows them to select the zone or locality where they would prefer to volunteer.
The Greater Chennai Corporation will coordinate with registered volunteers according to their skills and the requirements of emergency and relief operations. The initiative is intended to enable volunteers to work alongside the government and the civic body during floods, monsoon-related emergencies and other disaster-response activities.
The announcement comes ahead of the northeast monsoon, when Chennai’s low-lying areas and drainage systems can face pressure from heavy rainfall. The report does not specify the number of volunteers the corporation expects to enrol, the types of training that will be provided or the process through which volunteers will be deployed during a specific emergency.
GCC officials said the initiative followed a direction given by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay during a recent review meeting. The civic administration has not, in the information available, announced a separate timeline for training, verification or activation of registered volunteers.
People seeking to participate must download the upgraded Namma Chennai app, log in using a registered phone number and choose the volunteer-registration option. The corporation will use the information submitted during registration to coordinate participation based on applicants’ skills, previous experience and preferred locality.
