A woman and her male companion were allegedly assaulted by three youths in Ballygunge early Thursday after objecting to reckless driving near Sunny Park, prompting police to register a case and examine CCTV footage to identify the accused.
The incident occurred around 2am as the couple walked home along Ballygunge Park Road after their car broke down following dinner at a friend’s residence. The woman said in her police complaint that they had left the vehicle near Sunny Park after an apartment guard was unable to help restart it.
According to the complaint, a white sedan then sped down the road and swerved close to the woman. When her companion objected to the driving, the car was stopped and three youths allegedly got out and confronted them. The woman told police that the group shoved, punched and verbally abused her and her companion.
Police said one of the youths allegedly took a baton from the sedan’s boot and struck the woman on her arm and the man on his head. The male victim reportedly hit one of the youths while attempting to defend himself. One accused allegedly fled on foot, while another drove away. The vehicle later returned to collect the person who had left, police said, and nearly ran over the woman as it departed.
The victims have alleged that the accused, described in the complaint as 21-year-old local residents, later attempted to pressure them through their parents to withdraw the case. Police have registered a case at Ballygunge police station under provisions relating to assault and causing hurt. No arrests had been made when the report was published.
“We have registered an FIR of assault and hurt. We have not arrested anyone yet,” a police officer said.
Investigators are reviewing CCTV recordings from the surrounding locality, including cameras near Sunny Park, to identify the sedan’s registration number and reconstruct the sequence of events. The footage is also expected to help establish the movements of the accused and the alleged assault.
The case follows a dispute that began with an allegation of reckless driving on a neighbourhood road and escalated into a physical confrontation involving a weapon. Police action will now depend on identifying the accused and documenting the incident through CCTV footage and other evidence collected during the investigation.
