Despite receiving less global attention, Kolkata’s air quality consistently ranks among the world’s worst, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the city’s pollution crisis. According to a 2022 report on global air quality, Kolkata stood as the second-most polluted city in the world in 2019, considering its population density. One of the major contributors to Kolkata’s air pollution is the traditional celebration of Diwali, India’s Festival of Lights, marked by the widespread burning of fireworks. Studies have shown that emissions from firecrackers significantly deteriorate air quality, particularly concerning sulphur dioxide and fine particulate matter known as PM2.5.
