Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation Awarded Harit Yashogatha 2025 For Sustainable Water Initiatives

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation (CSMC) has been recognised with the prestigious ‘Harit Yashogatha Sanman 2025’ award for its exemplary initiatives in water management and sustainable urban environmental projects under the Mazi Vasundhara campaign. The award highlights the city’s commitment to eco-friendly water management, including centralised sewage treatment, water reuse, and sustainable river rejuvenation programmes, positioning the civic body as a national benchmark for climate-conscious urban governance.

Officials from the civic body highlighted that CSMC has implemented a range of projects designed to optimise water use and ensure sustainability. Centralised sewage water management systems have been established to treat and reuse wastewater in public gardens and at sports facilities, including Garware Stadium. Additionally, the city has embarked on a comprehensive plan to rejuvenate the Kham and Sukhana rivers, aiming to restore natural water flows and support biodiversity in urban waterways. The Mazi Vasundhara campaign, under which the initiatives were executed, focuses on empowering municipal corporations to take measurable climate action at the local level. Experts emphasised that CSMC’s success in water management demonstrates the practical benefits of integrating ecological sustainability with urban planning, ensuring that water resources are preserved, recycled, and used efficiently across civic infrastructure.

The award was presented at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai on October 14 during the programme ‘Celebrating Maharashtra’s Climate Leadership at the Local Level’. Officials from national and state environmental programmes, including representatives from the Swachh Maharashtra Abhiyan and All India Institute of Local Self-Government (AIILSG), lauded CSMC for its innovative approach to water sustainability and environmental stewardship. The corporation also showcased its work through a dedicated stall at the event, highlighting the outcomes of its water management and river rejuvenation initiatives. CSMC’s recognition underscores the increasing role of urban local bodies in driving sustainable development and climate resilience. Experts noted that initiatives such as centralised sewage treatment, water reuse, and river restoration not only address water scarcity but also improve public health, support urban biodiversity, and contribute to the city’s overall quality of life. The award positions Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar as a model for other municipalities seeking to achieve zero net carbon objectives and implement sustainable water management practices.

The civic body’s efforts also align with national priorities on water security and environmental sustainability. Officials stressed that ongoing monitoring and implementation of such projects will be crucial to sustaining gains and expanding similar programmes across other civic departments, including parks, public amenities, and urban infrastructure projects. By integrating innovative water management techniques with environmental restoration, CSMC has set a standard for sustainable urban governance, demonstrating how local action can deliver measurable climate impact and improve citizen well-being. The award reinforces the city’s commitment to creating eco-friendly, resilient, and sustainable urban spaces for its residents.
