Chennai Water Supply Disruption Hits Key Neighbourhoods
Thousands of households across northern and western parts of Chennai are set to experience a planned interruption in piped drinking water services beginning on June 13, as authorities undertake critical upgrades to trunk distribution infrastructure. The temporary shutdown, spanning parts of Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Ambattur and Anna Nagar, highlights the increasing challenge of maintaining ageing networks while supporting the city’s growing demand for reliable urban utilities.
According to officials familiar with the works, the interruption has been scheduled to facilitate the integration of new pipeline sections at key junctions near Jawaharlal Nehru Road and the Padi industrial corridor. The exercise is aimed at strengthening the main transmission system that supplies water to several densely populated residential areas. The planned maintenance will affect multiple wards covering neighbourhoods including Kolathur, Jawahar Nagar, Sembium, Ayanavaram, Perambur, Korattur, Villivakkam and parts of Anna Nagar West. Water services are expected to remain unavailable for roughly 24 hours, with restoration targeted for the morning of June 14.
Urban planners note that periodic infrastructure interventions are essential for improving network resilience in rapidly expanding metropolitan regions.
