Tamil Nadu Gains New Automotive Service Capacity

Chennai has added a large-format automotive service centre aimed at reducing repair delays and improving vehicle maintenance access, reflecting how aftersales infrastructure is becoming an increasingly important component of urban mobility ecosystems and regional economic growth.

As vehicle ownership rises across metropolitan India, the availability of efficient maintenance facilities has emerged as a key factor influencing mobility reliability and customer confidence. Against this backdrop, Škoda Auto India has opened a dedicated Skoda Express Care facility along the Old Mahabalipuram Road corridor in Perungudi, expanding service capacity in one of Chennai’s fastest-growing urban zones. Spread across nearly 28,000 square feet and equipped with multiple service bays, the centre has been designed to streamline maintenance operations and shorten vehicle turnaround times. Industry observers note that such investments are becoming increasingly important as cities grapple with rising traffic volumes and greater dependence on personal mobility.

Automotive service infrastructure, often overlooked in urban planning discussions, plays a significant role in supporting economic productivity. Faster servicing reduces vehicle downtime for households and businesses while strengthening local employment opportunities for technicians and skilled workers. The newly established Skoda Express Care model introduces process-driven servicing through pre-planned parts allocation, dedicated technical teams and digitally monitored workshop systems. Experts say these measures represent a broader shift across the automobile industry towards data-enabled maintenance and resource efficiency, helping operators optimise workflows and minimise unnecessary waste.

A senior company official indicated that improving ownership experience and ensuring predictable service schedules are becoming central to the brand’s long-term strategy as competition intensifies in India’s passenger vehicle market. The facility will be operated through an established dealer network in southern India, highlighting the growing role of regional partnerships in expanding mobility services. Sector analysts observe that strengthening aftersales ecosystems is increasingly viewed as essential to sustaining vehicle sales growth and maintaining customer trust over longer ownership cycles.Tamil Nadu remains one of the country’s important automobile markets, supported by a strong manufacturing base and expanding urban centres. The company currently maintains dozens of customer touchpoints across multiple cities in the state, including Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Salem, while its national network has expanded substantially over the past five years.

Urban planners point out that modern service facilities integrated with digital management systems can contribute to more efficient use of resources and lower operational wastage. As Indian cities continue to evolve towards more resilient and technology-enabled mobility networks, the quality and accessibility of aftersales infrastructure are likely to become as important as vehicle sales themselves. The expansion in Chennai underscores a broader transformation in the automotive ecosystem, where customer support, operational efficiency and sustainable service practices are increasingly shaping the future of urban mobility.
