Chennai Road Safety Measures Expand On ECR

Chennai has begun installing convex mirrors at multiple junctions along the East Coast Road corridor after crash pattern assessments revealed that limited visibility at feeder roads was a major contributor to fatal collisions. The intervention highlights a growing shift towards low-cost, people-focused safety solutions as traffic volumes continue to rise on one of the region’s busiest coastal highways.

Authorities overseeing the stretch between Uthandi and Kovalam have completed the installation of around 120 convex mirrors across approximately 50 locations. The move follows a detailed review of accident records and on-ground traffic conditions after repeated fatalities involving pedestrians and two-wheeler riders over the past year and a half. The East Coast Road, which carries commuters, tourist traffic and freight vehicles, experiences high speeds, particularly beyond the urban edge where congestion eases. Traffic specialists involved in the assessment found that many crashes were occurring when vehicles entered the highway from service lanes, neighbourhood roads and commercial access points with inadequate sightlines. Side-impact collisions emerged as a recurring pattern rather than conventional head-on crashes typically associated with highways.

Several locations including Akkarai, Panaiyur, Kanathur, Muttukadu and Uthandi have been identified as critical merging points where motorists often struggle to detect approaching traffic, especially after dark. By offering a wider field of vision, the convex mirrors on ECR are intended to improve driver awareness and reduce reaction times before vehicles enter the carriageway. Urban mobility experts note that such passive safety infrastructure can deliver immediate benefits without extensive reconstruction or land acquisition. Similar visibility-enhancing measures have been implemented in other Indian cities and in hilly regions where blind curves and constrained sight distances create comparable risks. Road safety specialists increasingly argue that engineering interventions should complement enforcement measures rather than rely solely on speed monitoring and penalties. Better junction design, improved pedestrian facilities and enhanced visibility are considered essential elements of a Safe System approach, which prioritises reducing the consequences of human error.

Officials are also preparing to introduce pedestrian-operated crossing systems at locations with heavy foot traffic. The mechanism would temporarily halt vehicles in both directions, creating a short but protected crossing interval for residents, workers and visitors moving across the corridor. The latest upgrades underscore the growing recognition that road infrastructure must respond not only to vehicle movement but also to the needs of vulnerable users. As Chennai expands and mobility demand intensifies, planners face increasing pressure to ensure that transport corridors are designed around safety, accessibility and long-term urban resilience.
