Chennai Traffic Diversions Begin Near Elephant Gate
A fresh set of traffic diversions and turning arrangements will come into force across parts of north Chennai from June 20 as civic authorities intensify stormwater infrastructure work near Elephant Gate Road. The changes are expected to affect daily commuting patterns between Chennai Central and several northern neighbourhoods, highlighting the increasing challenge of balancing mobility with climate-resilient urban upgrades.
According to traffic authorities, movement through the Elephant Gate corridor will be restructured to accommodate ongoing drainage construction undertaken by the city administration. Vehicles travelling from Chennai Central and the Choolai area towards Perambur, Vyasarpadi and Pulianthope will be redirected through Demellows Road, while access restrictions will apply on stretches of Elephant Gate Road. The revised arrangements also convert portions of the corridor into one-way traffic zones for vehicles arriving from Basin Bridge and heading towards the city centre. Motorists travelling from Chennai Central towards Basin Bridge will be guided through an alternative alignment using the Elephant Gate junction, the new bridge connection and Wall Tax Road.
Officials overseeing the exercise indicated that maintaining traffic flow during major infrastructure interventions remains critical as Chennai expands its network of stormwater drains to strengthen flood resilience. Urban planners note that such projects, though disruptive in the short term, are increasingly necessary as coastal cities face more frequent extreme rainfall events linked to changing climate patterns.The latest measures coincide with efforts to address congestion along the busy 200 Feet Road stretch between Thathan Kuppam Junction and Rajamangalam Junction. Three additional U-turn facilities have been introduced on a pilot basis to improve circulation and reduce delays caused by long detours.The new turning points have been positioned near a fuel station at Thathan Kuppam, close to the former DRJ Hospital premises and around Rajamangalam. These facilities are intended to provide easier access for residents arriving from adjoining neighbourhoods including Senthil Nagar, Vivekananda Nagar and Water Canal Road.
Transport experts say junction redesign and improved turning opportunities can help minimise bottlenecks without requiring major road widening, an approach that aligns with more efficient and people-centric mobility planning. However, they emphasise that clear signage and public awareness will determine the effectiveness of the new traffic diversions during the initial phase. For commuters, the coming weeks may involve route adjustments and longer travel times in certain pockets. Authorities are expected to monitor traffic behaviour and refine the arrangements based on ground conditions, with the broader objective of ensuring that essential drainage improvements proceed without severely affecting everyday mobility.
