Thousands of commuters travelling through west Chennai are encountering increasing delays and safety risks as damaged stretches beneath the MGR Flyover at Porur remain unrepaired weeks after utility excavation works were completed. The prolonged disruption is affecting traffic movement along one of the city’s busiest junctions and highlights broader concerns around coordination between infrastructure agencies and post-project restoration practices.

The affected sections beneath the flyover connect key traffic movements between Poonamallee, Porur and Guindy. According to residents and regular road users, electrical cable installation activities concluded nearly two months ago, yet several excavated portions have not been restored to their original condition. Simultaneous storm water drain works have further constrained road space, creating bottlenecks during peak hours. The deteriorated surfaces, marked by loose gravel, uneven patches and potholes, have emerged as a significant mobility challenge. Urban mobility experts note that delayed road restoration after utility interventions often creates a cascading impact on traffic efficiency, public safety and air quality. In dense urban corridors such as Porur, reduced carriageway width can quickly translate into longer travel times and increased fuel consumption.

The Porur service roads are also witnessing worsening dust pollution, particularly with heavy vehicles and buses passing through unfinished stretches. Residents living along the corridor and two-wheeler users are among those most exposed to airborne particulate matter generated by disturbed road surfaces. Environmental specialists have repeatedly pointed out that such conditions can undermine efforts aimed at improving urban liveability and reducing pollution exposure. Infrastructure planners argue that temporary mitigation measures are essential whenever permanent resurfacing is delayed. Measures such as dust suppression, barricading hazardous sections and ensuring smoother temporary surfaces can reduce risks for motorists and pedestrians. Without these interventions, uneven roads may increase the likelihood of skidding incidents, especially during monsoon conditions when loose material and waterlogging combine to create dangerous driving environments.

The issue has also renewed discussion around the need for stronger coordination among civic agencies responsible for roads, underground utilities and drainage infrastructure. Industry observers say fragmented execution frequently results in repeated excavation and restoration cycles that impose hidden economic costs on cities through congestion, vehicle wear and lost productivity. As Chennai continues investing in new infrastructure and climate-resilient drainage systems, urban planners believe equal emphasis must be placed on maintaining existing transport assets. Timely restoration of the Porur service roads, they say, will be crucial to ensuring that infrastructure upgrades translate into safer and more people-centric mobility outcomes for residents.
