A badly damaged stretch of Anna Nedum Salai in Kandanchavadi has prompted complaints from commuters, residents and local businesses, with the Greater Chennai Corporation saying repairs will be taken up in identified sections of the ward.
The road, which carries hundreds of vehicles daily towards Rajiv Gandhi Salai, has reportedly remained in poor condition for about six months. Recent rains have worsened the damage, causing smaller potholes to expand and leaving loose gravel and exposed stones across the surface.
Residents said the deteriorated road is creating risks for motorists using the stretch. They also criticised what they described as temporary patchwork that fails to withstand monsoon conditions.
P Sajeevan, a Perungudi resident, urged the civic body to carry out a durable relaying of the road rather than rely on repeated short-term repairs. “The civic body must ensure proper, durable relaying of the road instead of carrying out frequent, substandard patchworks that wash away during the monsoons,” he said.
The road condition is also affecting businesses operating along the stretch. Eatery owners alleged that dust raised by vehicles travelling over the damaged surface is disrupting their daily operations and affecting food hygiene.
Pedestrian access is another concern. A Subramaniyan, a senior citizen, said the stretch lacked proper footpaths and that the available walking space had been taken up by eatery extensions, roadside vendors and parked vehicles. As a result, pedestrians are being forced to walk on the busy carriageway, he said.
The Greater Chennai Corporation said some road cuts made by the Metro Water Office had been rectified. An official added that patchwork would be carried out on identified stretches across the ward and that the repairs would be attended to soon.
The corporation’s stated repair plan is expected to address the damaged sections, while residents have called for comprehensive road and pedestrian-access improvements along Anna Nedum Salai.
