Following the cessation of the model code of conduct, Chennai is poised to witness a resurgence in construction and restoration endeavors across various civic domains, encompassing roads, drains, bridges, and lakes.
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is spearheading a multitude of initiatives aimed at rejuvenating the city’s infrastructure landscape. Primarily, the GCC is preparing to initiate tenders for the refurbishment of 1,250 deteriorated roads citywide, alongside the allocation of work orders for a substantial 738-crore stormwater drain project in the OMR region. Additionally, plans are underway to metamorphose Kadapakkam Lake in Manali into an eco-park, demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability.
An official disclosed that tenders will be issued to relay roads amounting to 250 crore under the Nagarapura Salai Mempattu Thittam (NSMT) and the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Project (TURIP) scheme, with anticipated commencement by June 15. The scope of these roadworks encompasses 36 bus route roads and 1,200 interior roads, aimed at enhancing connectivity and facilitating smoother commutes for residents. Significantly, the stormwater drain projects along the OMR corridor, financed by the KfW German bank, mark a crucial phase in bolstering Chennai’s resilience against flooding. Covering an extensive stretch of 122 km and spanning areas including Pallikaranai, Perumbakkam, Semmenchery, and Sholinganallur, these projects are poised to alleviate inundation risks and fortify the city’s drainage infrastructure.
Moreover, efforts are underway to enhance water management through the restoration of Kadapakkam Lake, envisaged to augment its holding capacity and transform it into a verdant eco-park, fostering biodiversity and recreational opportunities for residents. With an emphasis on expediting pending tender processes and reinvigorating stalled projects, Chennai authorities are poised to navigate a swift transition towards infrastructural revitalization. Notably, directives have been issued to accelerate essential work orders and review upcoming bridge projects, underlining a concerted effort to prioritize urban development initiatives.
