A heavily used section of Chennai’s Inner Ring Road has emerged as a growing concern for commuters and transport operators after worsening surface damage and deep potholes began disrupting traffic movement near Anna Nagar West. The deterioration along this strategic urban corridor is exposing broader questions around road asset maintenance, construction quality and the resilience of transport infrastructure in rapidly expanding cities.

The affected stretch, located near one of the city’s busiest public transport hubs and connecting major residential and commercial districts, experiences high volumes of buses, freight vehicles, private cars and two-wheelers throughout the day. Motorists travelling between Padi and Tirumangalam have reported increasingly difficult conditions, particularly near pedestrian infrastructure where damaged road surfaces and water accumulation have reduced manoeuvrability and increased travel delays. Infrastructure specialists argue that recurring patchwork repairs often increase lifecycle costs compared with comprehensive resurfacing and preventive maintenance programmes, particularly on roads that function as major urban arteries. For Chennai, the challenge carries wider implications than commuter inconvenience alone. Delays caused by damaged roads increase fuel consumption, vehicle operating expenses and travel uncertainty, all of which affect economic productivity in a city dependent on efficient movement of people and goods. Poor road conditions also discourage active mobility and create disproportionate risks for two-wheeler riders, delivery workers and public transport users.

The Inner Ring Road damage further highlights the importance of climate-resilient urban infrastructure as Indian cities confront more intense rainfall events and rising pressure on ageing transport networks. Experts suggest that regular pavement audits, improved drainage integration and stricter oversight of reinstatement works after civic projects could reduce the frequency of recurring failures. With Chennai continuing to invest heavily in metro expansion, transit-oriented development and mobility upgrades, maintaining existing road assets may prove just as important as building new infrastructure.
