BMC’s Robust Monsoon Preparedness: 481 High-Capacity Pumps to Combat Mumbai Waterlogging

Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is gearing up for the monsoon season by announcing the installation of 481 high-capacity dewatering pumps across low-lying areas in the city. This proactive measure aims to prevent waterlogging during heavy rainfall, a persistent challenge faced by the city during the monsoon.

BMC’s Robust Monsoon Dewtering Pumps Across

The BMC, in a recent statement, outlined its strategy, highlighting that the strategically placed pumps will possess a robust dewatering capacity and remain operational during emergency situations. Each pump will be managed by a dedicated operator and helper, while civic engineers at the ward levels will closely monitor their operation. The decision to install these pumps is based on the historical pattern of water accumulation during intense rainfall coupled with high tides, typically occurring when Mumbai experiences 55 mm per hour of rainfall. To address this recurring issue, the BMC identifies vulnerable locations prone to waterlogging and deploys these pumps to efficiently pump out rainwater. The distribution plan for the 481 pumps includes 187 for the island city, 166 for the western suburbs, and 124 for the eastern suburbs. This comprehensive approach reflects the BMC’s commitment to enhancing the city’s resilience against monsoon challenges.

In previous years, the BMC had successfully deployed pumps to mitigate waterlogging, adapting to the dynamic needs of each monsoon season. In 2022 and 2023, additional pumps were introduced during the course of the season, responding to changing conditions. For the upcoming monsoon season in 2024, the BMC is taking a proactive stance by deploying 481 pumps across all 25 wards. This strategic move aligns with the civic body’s dedication to ensuring the city’s preparedness and minimising disruptions caused by waterlogging, ultimately contributing to Mumbai’s overall resilience during the monsoon.
