BMC Puts Deadline for Roadworks to End by May 31

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has imposed a ban on all new road excavations across Mumbai. The halt, effective immediately, aims to provide relief to commuters who have been grappling with disruptions due to ongoing construction projects.

Additionally, the BMC has set a strict deadline of May 31, 2025, for the completion of existing roadworks, including the city’s ambitious road concretisation programme. This move comes after several complaints from citizens regarding the heavy traffic caused by ongoing road projects. The BMC has directed that no new roads should be excavated for concretisation and that all pending work must be finished before the end of May.

With over 1,300 km of roads already concretised, the city is witnessing significant infrastructural changes, although the process has caused considerable inconvenience for daily commuters. Currently, Phase 1 of the concretisation project is nearly 75% complete, while Phase 2, launched in December 2024, has already begun to cover significant ground. However, the BMC has acknowledged the strain these works have placed on the city’s traffic flow, air quality, and overall environmental impact.

By halting new excavations, the civic body hopes to ease congestion and improve the city’s sustainability. Citizens are encouraged to report any unauthorized road digging to their local ward offices to ensure compliance with the new directive.

As Mumbai races toward its 2025 roadworks completion deadline, the BMC’s efforts reflect a broader push for more eco-friendly, sustainable urban infrastructure.
