Bihar Health Centres Get 30-Bed Upgrade Across All 38 Districts

Bihar health centres are set for a major capacity upgrade, with the state health department converting 135 primary health centres into 30-bed community health centres across all 38 districts. The move will add specialist posts and is intended to improve access to treatment in rural areas while reducing pressure on district hospitals and larger cities.

According to a health department communique issued on Tuesday and reported by the Times of India, the upgraded centres will be developed as specialised healthcare facilities under the state government’s Saat Nishchay-3 scheme. The centres are located in blocks across the state, extending the upgrade beyond district headquarters and larger urban facilities.

Specialist posts in orthopaedics, ophthalmology and ear, nose and throat care have been created at each centre. These services are among the key additions planned as the existing primary-level facilities are expanded into 30-bed community health centres.

Each upgraded centre will have 47 posts across 24 categories, according to the department. The sanctioned positions include a deputy superintendent, specialist doctors, general physicians, GNM nurses, senior pharmacists, laboratory technicians and physiotherapists. Other hospital management staff will also be appointed as part of the staffing structure.

The staffing plan also retains one post each for a dental hygienist and a dresser, which had been sanctioned earlier. The department’s stated objective is to ensure that the new centres have the personnel required to function as more comprehensive facilities rather than operating only as primary-care units.

For rural residents, the upgrade is expected to bring selected specialist services closer to home. Patients who currently depend on district hospitals or travel to bigger cities for treatment could have more options at the block level once the centres are fully operational. The announcement, however, does not specify an implementation schedule, construction timeline or the date on which all specialist services will begin at the upgraded facilities.

The expansion also addresses the distribution of patient demand across Bihar’s public health system. By strengthening facilities below the district level, the department aims to reduce the number of cases referred to district hospitals and ease their patient load. That could allow district-level facilities to focus more on cases requiring higher levels of care, although the communique does not provide current patient-load figures or projected reductions.

The success of the upgrade will depend on the deployment of the 47 sanctioned posts at each centre and the functioning of the planned specialist services. The department’s communique establishes the scale and staffing framework of the expansion, while further details on recruitment, commissioning and service availability remain awaited.
