A 36-year-old newspaper vendor suffered a severe fracture in his left leg after a speeding SUV crashed into a parked sedan in Bhopal’s DK-2 Danish Kunj around 5am on Thursday, pushing the car into his scooter and another two-wheeler. The SUV driver allegedly fled the spot, and Kolar police have seized the damaged vehicle while searching for him.
The vendor, identified as Malviya, was arranging newspapers near the Jain temple side when the SUV allegedly approached at high speed and struck the parked sedan. The force of the collision pushed the sedan into Malviya’s scooter, injuring his leg below the knee. Another scooter parked alongside his vehicle was also damaged.
The crash was captured on CCTV footage from a shop opposite the site, according to the report. The footage purportedly shows the SUV driver, two men and a woman passenger getting out of the vehicle after the collision and leaving the area. The complaint states that the driver abandoned the black SUV at the spot and fled.
Malviya’s colleague, Gaman, took him to a private hospital after the crash. Police recorded his statement in the emergency ward around 9am. His associate Amit told The Times of India that Malviya later underwent surgery at another private hospital.
The injured vendor also alleged that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. Police are investigating that allegation along with the circumstances of the collision and the driver’s flight from the scene. The allegation has not been independently established in the information available.
Kolar police registered a case under Sections 281 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The provisions cited in the report relate to rash and negligent driving and an act endangering life or personal safety. The case was registered after police recorded the injured man’s statement and began examining the available evidence.
Kolar station house officer Sanjay Soni said the damaged SUV had been seized. Police were searching for the driver who allegedly left the spot after the crash, while further investigation was continuing into the vehicle’s ownership, the people present inside it and the precise sequence of events.
The incident highlights the risks faced by early-morning newspaper vendors and other workers operating beside residential roads before daylight traffic builds up. In this case, the police investigation is expected to establish how the crash occurred and whether the allegations concerning alcohol use and the driver’s conduct can be substantiated.
