Bengaluru civic authorities have fined two commercial establishments ₹10,000 each for failing to segregate waste and for dumping mixed waste beside a public road, signalling renewed enforcement of solid waste management rules across the city.
The South City Corporation staff imposed the first fine on Chulha Chowki Da Dhaba on 5th Main Road in Pattabhiramanagar, within the Jayanagar area. The establishment was penalised for not separating the waste it generated into wet and dry categories.
A second ₹10,000 fine was imposed and recovered from Shell petrol bunk, operated by Avignya Enterprises, on Jakkasandra Road in the HSR Layout area. Civic officials said a large quantity of mixed waste had been dumped along the roadside near the petrol bunk.
After issuing the penalties, officials briefed the staff and owners of the establishments about the importance of waste management. They instructed commercial premises to segregate waste at source into wet, dry and hazardous categories and warned them against disposing of waste in public spaces or along roadsides.
The enforcement action covers businesses that are significant waste generators in neighbourhoods, including hotels, dhabas, petrol stations and other commercial establishments. The municipal instructions place responsibility on these premises to manage the waste generated at their source rather than allowing mixed waste to enter public areas.
The incidents also highlight the operational challenge faced by Bengaluru’s civic administration in maintaining roadside cleanliness. When commercial waste is mixed or dumped in public areas, it can affect local sanitation and place an additional burden on the city’s waste collection and processing system. The report, however, does not specify the quantity of waste involved, the names of the enforcement teams or whether the establishments had received earlier notices.
Municipal Commissioner K.N. Ramesh warned that inspections would continue and that establishments found dumping waste in public places would face fines and legal action. The warning applies to businesses that fail to comply with solid waste management requirements as well as those that damage the cleanliness and sanitation of public spaces.
The latest action establishes two immediate enforcement outcomes: a fine for failure to segregate waste at a food establishment and a separate penalty for roadside dumping near a petrol station. Further inspections and enforcement proceedings are expected to continue under the municipal administration’s waste management drive.
