Police have arrested more than 20 people after a group entered a shed near Hulimangala village in Bengaluru’s Hebbagodi police station limits and allegedly clashed with residents over claims that they were undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants, according to a report by Prajavani.
The incident took place near the IFMB hostel in Shikaripalya, where residents from West Bengal were living in sheds. Members of the Rashtra Rakshana Pada allegedly entered the premises after assuming that the occupants were Bangladeshi nationals living in India without legal documents. The confrontation escalated into a group clash.
Hebbagodi police have registered both a complaint and a counter-complaint in connection with the incident. Police said members of the Rashtra Rakshana Pada and people living in the sheds were arrested based on the two complaints.
The arrests include T. Nagendrappa of Electronic City, Amit Soudi of Mylasandra Ramesh Reddy Layout, Sannidhi S. Shetty of Konappana Agrahara and C. Rajat Pratap Rai of Parappana Agrahara, among others, the report said. The source identified the arrested group as comprising more than 20 people.
Four people, identified as Nagendrappa, Santosh Kartal, Amit and Pavan, were injured in the clash, according to the report. The injuries were reported in the context of the confrontation, but the supplied report does not provide details on their severity or whether any hospitalisations took place.
Hajiful Sheikh, identified as a resident from West Bengal, filed a complaint against members of the Rashtra Rakshana Pada, alleging that they entered the sheds without authorisation and assaulted residents. The report does not establish that the shed occupants were undocumented immigrants; it states that the group entered the premises believing them to be Bangladeshi nationals without legal status.
The case highlights the risks created when assumptions about residents’ identity or documentation lead to vigilante action in fast-growing urban areas. The supplied report does not provide details of any official immigration-status verification, further investigation or charges beyond the complaints and arrests. Police action in the case is based on the complaints filed by both sides.
