Bengaluru rain flooding disrupted traffic across several parts of the city on Wednesday evening after intense showers left underpasses, flyovers and major roads waterlogged, with authorities warning that more heavy rain is possible over the next two to three days.
The rain began intensifying after 4 pm following a cloudy afternoon, particularly across eastern and northern Bengaluru. Water accumulated on roads in several neighbourhoods, leaving two-wheeler riders unable to pass through some stretches and causing long traffic queues.
The Peenya flyover was among the affected locations, while vehicles lined up towards Yogeshwaranagar and the Hebbal Ring Road. The Vidyashilpa railway underpass in Yelahanka, Rashtriyothana flyover, Chowdappa Layout and Thanisandra Road also reported waterlogging and disrupted movement.
Traffic was affected on the stretch from Rainbow Hospital towards Karthik Nagar, between Yelahanka BSF and Airport Road, and from Mahadevapura to Lorry Junction. Ayyappa Nagar recorded slow-moving traffic towards the ITPL main road. A bus that broke down near Lulu Mall added to congestion towards Rajajinagar.
Fallen trees further disrupted movement in parts of the city, including near Vignana Nagar and Vidhana Soudha. Several roads remained waterlogged late into the night as rain continued in different areas.
Rainfall readings reported in the city included 5.55 cm in Hoodi, 5 cm in Jakkur, 4.25 cm each at Konena Agrahara and HAL Airport, and 3.65 cm at HMT. Devasandra, A Narayanapura, Kodigehalli and Hebbal recorded 3.15 cm, 2.8 cm, 3.15 cm and 2.8 cm respectively. Other locations, including Varthur, Banashankari, Nagavara and Adugodi, also recorded rainfall.
Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda held a virtual meeting on Wednesday evening with the commissioners of the five civic corporations, the chief commissioner and other officials. He instructed officials to take preventive measures before incidents occurred, citing a warning from the Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority that western, northern, eastern and central Bengaluru could receive heavier rain over the next two to three days.
The minister directed the Prahari vehicle teams to remain active, conduct rounds across the city and provide immediate assistance to people who need help. The directions came as waterlogging at key underpasses, flyovers and arterial roads once again slowed movement across multiple parts of Bengaluru.
