Bengaluru is expected to receive heavy rain and gusty winds over the next three hours on September 30, after thunderstorms began across parts of the city from around 5am. The weather department has forecast heavy rain in Bengaluru and several other Karnataka districts, with a yellow alert issued for 11 districts.
The warning follows two days of early-morning rain in the city. Areas including Malleswaram, Seshadripuram and Majestic recorded thunderstorms and heavy showers on Wednesday morning, according to a report by Vijay Karnataka. The rain has already affected traffic and movement in several locations.
The weather department has forecast winds travelling at 30–40 kmph during the next three hours. Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in Bengaluru, Davanagere, Chikkamagaluru and Chitradurga. Light to moderate rain is likely in Tumakuru, Bengaluru Rural, Ramanagara, Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Shivamogga, Ballari, Kolar and Chikkaballapur, the report said.
The forecast has been linked to a cyclonic circulation associated with a low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea and weather systems over parts of north Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh. The report said these systems were contributing to the possibility of heavy rain and strong winds across Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka.
Wednesday’s rain had already disrupted normal movement in parts of Bengaluru. Several roads were reported to be waterlogged, while potholes became difficult to identify under the accumulated water. The combination of poor visibility, standing water and damaged road surfaces created difficulties for motorists and other road users.
Fallen trees also affected local traffic and caused property damage. In Malleswaram, a large tree fell on two cars and an autorickshaw, damaging all three vehicles. In Koramangala, another fallen tree obstructed traffic for some time, according to the report.
The short-duration warning places particular pressure on the city’s road network during the morning movement period. Waterlogging can slow traffic, while fallen branches and trees can block carriageways and create additional risks for two-wheelers and pedestrians. The report does not provide details of any citywide emergency response or road-clearance measures.
The weather department’s warning covers Bengaluru as well as districts across central, southern and northern Karnataka. The forecast period is limited to the next three hours, while the reported impacts from the previous day indicate that localised flooding and tree falls remain immediate concerns during intense showers.
