The India Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms and heavy rain in Bengaluru and several other parts of Karnataka on September 30 and October 1, with a yellow alert issued for coastal, Malnad and southern interior districts. The forecast could bring periods of intense rain, gusty winds and disruption to traffic and daily activity across the state.
According to a report by Prajavani, rain is expected to continue across several Karnataka districts during the first week of October after four to five days of widespread rainfall. The department has warned of thunderstorm activity accompanied by heavy rain in parts of 12 districts over the next two days.
In coastal Karnataka, isolated places in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi may receive heavy rain with thunder and lightning. Uttara Kannada is expected to experience moderate rain with thunder and lightning in some areas during the same period.
The southern interior districts named in the forecast include Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapur, Chikkamagaluru, Davanagere, Kodagu, Shivamogga, Hassan and Tumakuru. Isolated parts of these districts may receive thunderstorms on both days. Chamarajanagar, Vijayanagara, Chitradurga, Kolar, Mysuru, Mandya and Bengaluru South may also see thunderstorms and moderate rain in some locations.
For Bengaluru and its surrounding areas, the forecast indicates generally cloudy conditions for the next 48 hours. While some areas may receive heavy rain, other parts of the city are expected to record light to moderate showers. The weather department has also warned of occasional thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching 30 to 40 kilometres per hour.
The forecast comes after Bengaluru received good rainfall in several neighbourhoods for three consecutive days. Short periods of heavy rain can affect road traffic, visibility and movement, particularly where storm-water drainage is unable to clear runoff quickly. The accompanying gusty winds and lightning may also affect outdoor activity and travel, although the report does not provide details of any specific civic advisories or closures.
In north interior Karnataka, parts of Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri and Koppal may receive thunderstorms and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour. The department has forecast mainly dry weather in Bagalkot, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Vijayapura and Yadgir.
The yellow alert covers the two-day period of September 30 and October 1. Residents and commuters in the affected districts will need to monitor local weather updates as the forecast period progresses, particularly in areas where thunderstorms and strong winds are expected.
