AP Mayor Reservations Set Stage for Long-Delayed Civic Polls

AP mayor reservations have been finalised for all 17 municipal corporations in Andhra Pradesh, removing a key administrative hurdle ahead of the state’s long-awaited urban local body elections. The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department issued the notification through Government Order No. 252 on Monday, with Principal Secretary Suresh Kumar signing the orders.

Under the allocation, five mayoral posts have been reserved for Backward Classes, two for Scheduled Castes and one for a Scheduled Tribe. Five other posts have been reserved for women in the general category, while four corporations have been left unreserved.

The Scheduled Tribe reservation applies to Mangalagiri-Tadepalli. Rajahmundry and Kurnool have been placed in the Scheduled Caste category. Machilipatnam and Kakinada have been allocated to BC women, while Anantapur, Chittoor and Eluru have been assigned to BC general candidates.

The general women’s category covers Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Guntur, Kadapa and Visakhapatnam. The unreserved mayoral posts are in Tirupati, Vijayawada, Ongole and Nellore, leaving them open to candidates from any community category.

The allocation gives women the mayoral posts in two of the state’s biggest urban centres, Visakhapatnam and Guntur. It also leaves Vijayawada and Tirupati, two prominent cities with unreserved posts, open to candidates without a reservation requirement based on social category.

Finalising the reservation roster is an essential step before the civic election process can move forward across the municipal corporations. The notification establishes the category under which mayoral candidates will contest in each corporation, while the source report states that the urban local body elections are expected to be held soon.
