AHMEDABAD: Ahmedabad is preparing to mechanise the cleaning of guard railings along some of its busiest transport corridors, with the municipal corporation proposing four specialised washing machines at an estimated base cost of ₹8.28 crore. The move targets railings along BRTS and Metro routes, central road verges and other major corridors where regular upkeep remains labour-intensive.
The proposed equipment would replace a largely manual cleaning process with dedicated machinery designed to wash roadside guard railings more efficiently. For a city expanding its mass-transit network and investing in upgraded road corridors, the proposal also highlights a less visible part of infrastructure management: keeping public assets clean after construction is completed. Each machine is estimated to cost around ₹2.07 crore before GST. The municipal proposal also factors in operational expenditure, with each unit expected to work for an eight-hour shift during the initial warranty period. The estimated daily operating cost is about ₹18,540 per machine during that period and could rise to nearly ₹18,990 after the warranty expires. The civic body is also planning a five-year operation and maintenance arrangement. This is intended to ensure that the machines remain operational rather than becoming underused municipal assets after procurement. The proposal has been placed before the AMC Standing Committee for consideration.
The spending raises a broader question about how Ahmedabad manages the growing maintenance burden associated with transport infrastructure. BRTS lanes, Metro corridors, road medians and landscaped stretches require continuous cleaning and upkeep, particularly in high-traffic areas where dust, vehicle emissions and roadside debris can quickly affect the appearance and usability of public spaces. Mechanisation could reduce dependence on repetitive manual work and potentially allow maintenance teams to cover longer stretches more consistently. However, its effectiveness will depend on utilisation rates, maintenance discipline and whether the equipment can operate efficiently across different road conditions. There is also a safety dimension. Cleaner barriers and road-edge infrastructure can improve visibility of roadside assets, while better-maintained corridors can contribute to a more orderly public environment.
For pedestrians and public-transport users, however, cleanliness needs to be accompanied by safe crossings, accessible footpaths, adequate lighting and unobstructed walking routes. The proposal therefore represents more than a procurement decision. As Ahmedabad expands its transit infrastructure, the city will increasingly need predictable maintenance systems that protect public investments without creating excessive recurring costs. The immediate next step is approval by the municipal committee. If cleared, deployment and subsequent performance monitoring will determine whether mechanised cleaning can deliver a measurable improvement in the upkeep of Ahmedabad’s major mobility corridors.
