Kolkata Fuel Prices Hold Steady Amid Crude Volatility

Kolkata’s petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged on August 10, keeping fuel costs stable for motorists despite a rise in international crude prices. Petrol was priced at ₹113.51 a litre, while diesel stood at ₹99.82. For Kolkata, where road transport supports daily commuting, deliveries and commercial activity, the stability offers short-term predictability even as global energy markets remain unsettled.

International oil benchmarks moved higher over the weekend amid uncertainty surrounding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude rose 1.44% to $84.79 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate gained 1.08% to $79.29. The movement highlights how geopolitical developments and disruptions along major energy routes can quickly influence the cost structure of economies that rely heavily on imported crude. For Kolkata residents, however, the immediate impact at fuel stations was limited. State-run oil marketing companies did not revise pump prices on Monday. This means households, taxi operators, delivery workers and businesses dependent on road transport did not face another daily increase in fuel expenditure. The gap between petrol and diesel prices also remains significant. At ₹113.51 a litre, petrol continues to represent a substantial recurring expense for private vehicle users. Diesel at ₹99.82 a litre is particularly relevant to commercial mobility, including goods movement and other transport-dependent activities across the wider metropolitan economy.

Fuel prices are influenced by more than the international crude benchmark. The rupee-dollar exchange rate, refining expenses, taxation and dealer margins also contribute to the final retail price. As a result, movements in global oil markets do not always translate immediately into equivalent changes at Indian fuel stations. The stability is useful for short-term household budgeting, but it does not remove the longer-term pressure created by expensive road-based mobility. Higher fuel costs can feed into freight, logistics and service expenses, particularly when businesses have limited alternatives to petroleum-powered transport. For Kolkata, the broader urban question is therefore less about a single day’s pump price and more about reducing exposure to volatile energy costs. Better public transport, efficient freight systems, walkable neighbourhoods and cleaner mobility can gradually lower dependence on fossil fuels while improving the resilience of the city’s economy.

For now, Kolkata fuel prices remain unchanged. The next movement will depend on global crude conditions, currency movements and domestic pricing decisions, making energy efficiency increasingly important for both households and the wider urban economy.
